For a few items, I've used the brass etching technique described HERE.
A copper sulfate solution (copper sulfate from the gardening section of the hardware store) in a plastic bucket, and a digital multimeter in series with the circuit. For repeatable results, its worth noting the time and current that you use each time.

The power supply I used was the Dick Smith Electronics M9544.
